ABC Longmeadow is a non-profit, self-funded organization that brings academically promising students from the inner city to live and go to high school in Longmeadow. For nearly 30 years, kids from New York, Newark and Boston have come to live at the ABC House. They live with residential directors and become a part of the Longmeadow community. In 2004 one of our students graduated from Longmeadow High School and will be attending the University of Massachusetts, majoring in Engineering. Other recent graduates attend Trinity College, Bentley College, and Rennselaer Polytechnic Insitute. Over the years, more than 80 students have graduated from Longmeadow High School and virtually all have gone on to college.
ABC Longmeadow is a chapter of A Better Chance National whose mission is "to substantially increase the number of minority youth capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society." ABC Longmeadow is one of only 25 public schools systems with chapters. Approximately 15% of A Better Chance alumni graduated from these public school programs, which comprise only 10% of the total.
However, all our funds are raised locally. Our entire operating budget depends on the generosity of the community. Individual gifts comprise the greatest portion of our budget. Many local foundations, corporations, churches, synagogues and community organizations also contribute. You will find many of them located under Resource Locations on the Community Page
